Large Cloth Chess Sets
About 10 years ago, my son was brain injured in an automobile accident. Doing well mentally, he really loves to play chess now.Tremors made it impossible for him to play chess without knocking the pieces all over. Regular chess sets were impossible for him to use. After some experimenting the solution was an enlarged chess set made from cloth and embroidery. The pieces are embroidered. Telling the difference between the king, queen and bishop, as the pieces are flat, really created a lot of confusion. The problem was solved by embroidering a K, Q, and B on the appropriate pieces. The opposite side of the pieces are a different colors so that the pieces may be used for checkers. The board needed to be quite large, not only for visual purposes, but also to accommodate the tremors. There is also a zippered pocket on the side to hold the pieces. It's a working system. My son loves it and plays every day. This chess set was made from felt and do to him dragging his arm across the "board" it tended to "pill" the felt. The ones available for sale will be made from suede cloth. This one was made round to accommodate the tables in his group home, but as they are custom made they could be square. These chess sets sell for $200. ![]() |
